The Crowd Went Wild! Canadian Baseball’s Love Affair with the Railway @ online

Join Toronto Railway Museum on June 17 for the next online lecture in their 2021 series: The Crowd Went Wild! Presented by Canada’s premier baseball historian, William Humber, discover the role the railways played in popularizing baseball in Canada.

Canadian baseball’s biggest myth is how Americans imposed it on us. Not so! We shared with them the modern game’s evolution from its folk roots. In some ways, Canadians had an even bigger role. The railway system brought this early role to full maturity. Its independent growth in Ontario, between 1854-1873, was railway reliant. Railway porters were likely the first African-Canadian team in 1869. In 1934, Babe Ruth started his epical trip to Japan with a rail stopover in Moose Jaw. The crowd on a Saskatchewan platform went wild! To this day the GO train or subway takes most people to Blue Jays games and the VIA stopover in St. Marys Ontario is a homerun drive to Canada’s Baseball Hall of Fame.

June 2021 Meeting: Virtual Video Tour of Woodland Cultural Centre @ online by Zoom
Jun 23 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
June 2021 Meeting: Virtual Video Tour of Woodland Cultural Centre @ online by Zoom

The Mohawk Institute is one of a handful of Residential School buildings left standing in Canada; one of two in Ontario. It is the only one that offered in-person guided tours of the building until its closure for repairs in 2016. To meet the demand for tours and continue to fulfill our mandate to educate, Woodland Cultural Centre pivoted to offering virtual video tours.

The virtual tour follows our guide, Lorrie Gallant, into the school, where she provides insight and information into the 140-year history of Mohawk Institute Residential School. During the tour you will see inside the building as Lorrie takes you through the girls’ and boys’ dormitories, the cafeteria, laundry room, and more. In addition, you will hear first-hand accounts from five Survivors of the Mohawk Institute.

During the tour you may hear things that some viewers will find traumatic. We ask that you prepare yourselves for what you are about to witness and take time for self-care. For those of you working from home please be aware this tour is not suitable for children under 14 years of age and ask that you find a location in your home where you may watch the video without the presence of any children in your care.

The Annual General Meeting of the NYHS was scheduled to be held this month. Because of the pandemic and the prospect of things getting back to ‘normal’ the Board of Directors has postponed the AGM till the December meeting. Hopefully, we will be able to meet in person by that time. Anyone who wishes to be active on the Board or participate in work of the Committees of the Society should contact Bill Aird at info@nyhs.ca.

There is no need to pre-register. Please join us on the day!

NeighbourLink North York Meet Your Neighbour Week
Aug 14 – Aug 21 all-day
NeighbourLink North York Meet Your Neighbour Week

A week of building community connections through meet ups in the neighbourhood!

About this event

NeighbourLink North York is excited to announce Meet Your Neighbour Week August 14th to the 21st! A full week of connecting with all of the amazing residents that make Willowdale such a special place! What could be better after a year and a half of social isolation?

What is Meet Your Neighbour Week?

A series of meet ups in our neighbourhood organized for neighbours by neighbours! These neighbour meet ups can range from offering lemonade on your driveway for those who live on your street or hanging out in a park with the people that live on the same floor of your condo! The week will culminate with Willowdale Yard Sale Day on August 21st.

How does it work?

If you would like to host a small meet up for your neighbours you can organize it on your own or you can register here with the free “Neighbour Meet Up Host” ticket. When you do you’ll receive a Meet Your Neighbour Kit. It will include ideas for your meet up and a poster that you can add your meet up details to and use as an invitation for your neighbours.

What is Willowdale Yard Sale Day?

Willowdale Yard Sale Day will be on Saturday August 21st. It’s an opportunity to sell your treasures and shop the neighbourhood before the end of the summer. You can register your yard sale here with the “Yard Sale Host” ticket. When you register, your yard sale address and time will be added to the Willowdale Yard Sale Map which we will be advertising to help drive business to your sale. Registration will also get you a custom made yard sign!

If you live in a house and would be willing to host a condo resident on your lawn or driveway, you can let us know in the registration form as well!

Food Drive Component:

We are piloting our Willowtree Food Bank in August and would love to collect non-perishable food from the community throughout Meet Your Neighbour Week. We encourage Neighbour Meet Up and Yard Sale Day Hosts to collect food from their neighbours at their event to help build our inventory! At the end of the week there will be an opportunity to drop off the food or have it collected!

You can also make a donation to our food bank through the registration!

Guidelines:

We ask that all participants abide by current COVID -9 guidelines and restrictions.

Please be respectful of your fellow neighbours, be inclusive, friendly and safe!

Any questions can be sent to NeighbourLink’s Event Coordinator Sebastian at sebastian@neighbourlink.org.

We cannot wait to hear all about your meet ups and yard sales! Tag NeighbourLink North York and We Love Willowdale on social media! And above all have fun!
