With Remembrance Day just three days away, tonight’s lecture by well-known Canadian actor and author R. H. Thomson, By the Ghost Light: Wars, Memory and Families, based on his book of the same title, examines how we speak about war and its aftermath. Using the letters from his great uncles who served in World War One as a starting point, “Thomson roams through a century of folly to fathom the human cost concealed by the order and calm of ceremonial parades, memorials and monuments. Profoundly impacted by his family’s history, Thomson has advocated for other ways to acknowledge the dead, and created The World Remembers, an ambitious international project to individually name each of the millions killed in the First World War.” (from the dust jacket). Copies of By the Ghost Light will be available at a reduced price for sale and signing by the author.
